Cyanide added diversity and it's quite catchy too (probably they thought it might work well with crowds) whereas Just a Bullet Away would add quality. Not that Cyanide is a horrible song, though.

Seriously, how did Cyanide make it and Just a Bullet Away didnt?
I kno rite!!! Well it's cuz I think bullet wasn't finished at that point yet. it was still going under "holy revolver" or "shine" or whatever. I don't think any of the BM songs were finished they were just in the very early demo stages (ie. jjust the main riff and thats it!). so it doesn't surprise me. But still imagine if DM was a double disc (holie shit!)

They were all finished. How do I know? Because they told us so. You are confused because of the tentative titles. The song was finished, recorded and ready to release as far as I remember.
I think you are confused as well. The press release says the BM songs were still in the demo phase. Once they weren't selected to go on the album, they apparently stopped tightening them up. Which explains that awkward break in Bullet.

Vulturous should've made the album. It shits all over Dull Movement and Bowel Movement, even though the song, as performed in that South Korean show, didn't sound anywhere near complete.Seriously, how did Cyanide make it and Just a Bullet Away didnt?
I guess it sounds too heavy and not catchy enough.

Or the even more awkward transition in Hate Train

Hate Train's transitions flow quite well. Bullet's are abrupt/awkward as fuck tho.Or the even more awkward transition in Hate Train
As for the OP's question, for me it basically boils down to James' solo vs "say is that rain" section.
Gonna have to go with the latter actually.

It's awesome. It's great that they reminded themselves they are capable of coming up with such unexpected twists and make it work.

If that's the case, unintentionally unexpected. Sounds more like they half assed them, than thought "hey, this chorus after the verse, and the wonky gaps, they'll give the listeners a cool surprise".It's awesome. It's great that they reminded themselves they are capable of coming up with such unexpected twists and make it work.

I prefer Cyanide. It's probably one of my favorites on the album, as a matter of fact.
This.

looool - the transistion right after the intro which leads into the "fuel" riff is ridiculously bad... By far the worst moment on BM imo. The rest of the song is fine and pure awsomeness...
OT - I like both songs a lot, Bullet is much more fresh so the comparison is unfair

Well, even if that were the case, that would just make the rest of the songs' transitions that much worse. ("cause you lieeed!" *cringe*)

Cyanide has a stronger/catchier chorus. Probably all it took.
Cyanide is a terrible song, one of mets worse, any one of the 4 EP's should have made it instead of cyanide, or unforgiven III.

The epic interlude followed by the epic build-up and the epic solo is one of my favorite Metallica moments ever.I can't get enough of James' solo on JABA. It sounds like nothing Metallica had done in the solo department. Too bad it's too short!
