It has to be 20 songs, so I would pick

1.) Enter Sandman (obviously)
2.) Master of Puppets (obvious)
3.) Creeping Death
4.) One
5.) Sad But True
6.) Seek and Destroy
7.) Fade to Black
8.) Nothing Else Matters
9.) Unforgiven
10.) King Nothing
11.) Wherever I May Roam
12.) Battery
13.) Sanitarium
14.) Fuel
15.) For Whom The Bell Tolls
16.) Ride The Lightning
17.) Whiplash
18.) Until It Sleeps
19.) The Day That Never Comes
20.) I Disappear

Maybe not in that exact order, maybe a bit scrambled so the most popular ones aren't near the top

What would you change in my list?

I am completely happy with S&M as it practically is a "best of", in my opinion. Yes there are some songs I would like to have seen on it (Fade, Sanitarium, Horsemen), but I am totally in love with that album.

Their greatest hits obviously have to be their best known songs but I could never sign off on this album. For the past 3 years I haven't been able to stand listening to Enter Sandman. Seek & Destroy has always been boring to me. And anything put out between 1992-2007 is not a greatest hit in my book.

5. Seek and Destroy

7. For Whom The Bell Tolls
8. Fade To Black
9. The Unforgiven
10. Battery

14. Hero Of The Day
15. Until It Sleeps
16. Fuel
17. The Memory Remains
18. St. Anger
19. The Day That Never Comes
20. All Nightmare Long

Even if you don't like all these songs, it is a "Greatest Hits" album. So St. Anger needs to be included. This would be songs that the casual listener would listen to and think that they are a big Metallica fan. So you can include stuff like Just A Bullet Away or any other of your personal favorites.

I actually made my very own Greatest Hits album that consists of three discs. I arranged them like so:

Disc 1
  • Enter Sandman
  • Sad but True
  • Master of Puppets
  • The Unforgiven
  • Seek & Destroy
  • Frantic
  • Blackened
  • Fuel
  • The Memory Remains
  • Hero of The Day
  • Better Than You
  • Creeping Death
  • Bleeding Me
Disc 2
  • Nothing Else Matters
  • Until It Sleeps
  • King Nothing
  • The Unforgiven II
  • All Nightmare Long
  • For Whom The Bell Tolls
  • Battery
  • One
  • I Disappear
  • Wherever I May Roam
  • Prince Charming
  • Fade To Black
  • Mama Said

Disc 3
  • The Call of Ktulu
  • ...And Justice for All (edit)
  • Some Kind of Monster (radio edit)
  • The Unforgiven III
  • Turn The Page
  • St. Anger
  • No Leaf Clover
  • Motorbreath
  • Harvester of Sorrow
  • 2 x 4
  • My World
  • The God That Failed
  • Low Man's Lyric (edit)

I admit that there are songs that some fans may not agree but hey, it is my greatest hits, no?

no order:
Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
For whom the bell tolls
Fade to Black
Creeping death
Battery
Master of puppets
Blackened
Harvester of sorrow
One
Enter sandman
Sad but true
Nothing else matters
King nothing
The Memory Remains
Fuel
Frantic
St. Anger
The day that never comes
Hell and Back
i would have put "am i evil" or "stone cold crazy" on there but those are covers even though they're probably 2 of there bigger songs. and although (myself) and many people think "rebel" is the best song on "beyond magnetic" hell and back is more popular (live plays and radio plays)

Considering greatest hits i.e. songs that non-hardcore metallica fans would know of, and not solely my personal favorites, I guess it would be these 20:

Seek & Destroy
The Four Horsemen
Whiplash
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Fade to Black
Creeping Death
Battery
Master of Puppets
Sanitarium
Blackened
One
Enter Sandman
Sad But True
Nothing Else Matters
Wherever I May Roam
The Unforgiven
Fuel
The Memory Remains
St. Anger (or Until It Sleeps)
The Day That Never Comes

Annoyingly, Greatest Hits are always compiled with the singles and maybe one or two bonus songs.
So should they ever do one that's what it is likely to be. All the singles with some classics, and who knows maybe a new song or two like most bands do with their "hits" albums.
