i dont think i'm alone here or even a *prisoner of the moment* when i say the release of Beyond Magnetic sent my opinion of Death Magnetic over the top.

when you put the whole thing together.... Metallica clearly hit this one out of the ball park.... that those 4 songs didnt make the record is remarkable.

i will proudly put this group of songs right next to Puppets and Justice and defend them vehemently .

WELL DONE!

Not even in the same universe as MOP or AJFA. A very good album, though.

I am definitely of the opinion that the four unreleased tracks were of equal, if not better, quality to those that made the album. In an ideal world, Death Magnetic would have been 14 songs long but ultimately they are both great bodies of work and when combined, are absolutely brilliant.

I just cant get fully in BM. The chorus for Train is a lil weak, until the end when the beat kicks in. The rest is ok, but it has a riff rehashed from Fuel. Bullet has a killer mid section but again, the chorus is so weak. Hell and Back is all weak to me, it does pick up half way thru tho. Rebel is the only song I dig all the way thru. I dunno, I think for the most part peeps were just excited that it was "new" 'Tallica..especially after the Lulu fiasco. In a nutshell DM towers over BM.

The opinion of quality of Beyond Magnetic seems quite polarized.

People have their preferences, but almost everyone agrees that it's a great EP/album.

Well, most people I know where I live don't seem to dig it very much, despite my raving to the contrary.

Presumably you mean almost everyone in the little fishbowl of AM.

Actually, a lot of people who heavily criticized DM (musically) said they would've liked it better if ______ and ______ off BM would've been on it. CoverKillerNation and that Dom guy from Metal Hammer, for instance.

You see, this is a constant problem here. So simplistic. I disagree with a post that stated " almost everyone agrees that it's a great EP/album" (I've bolded the parts that make this a significant exaggeration) and you respond with "generally well received" and a couple of examples of people who liked it, neither of which responses even conflict with my post.

Beyond Magnetic is dull. There's a handful of riffs that rank somewhere between "good" and "very good", but it suffers greatly from the same bloatedness and lack of focus as its big brother.

I thought it was interesting that people who've been slagging all Metallica post TBA found BM to their liking. Wasn't really trying to counter your post or the one you replied to, just discuss their content.

the Magnetics are VASTLY under rated in my opinion... mostly because Metallica as a band has been so villified over the past 15 years.....

Pretty much this. The gripes about the mastering are somewhat justified, but they don't totally ruin what is really a great album.
