Hey guys! I am new to the forum and have a question. I apologize if this has been asked before. Does anybody know if Metallica had songs for the Black Album that didn't make it on? I think they already had a demo when they went to see Bob Rock so maybe what's on the album is all of them. Would appreciate any info. Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure those are all the songs they wrote at the time. The only unreleased songs left are the ones that didn't make it to St Anger.

Surprised Het09 wasn't here pissing his pants when the Fillmore stuff happened actually ha. Anyone know where the guy went?
While we're at it, the Jets fan seems to have disappeared too.

Unlike the people who picked on him, he was cool and didn't rub it in. Showing far more class than those who bullied him for wanting unreleased material.

Indeed.
More restraint than I would've exhibited for gloating haha.

They didn't bully him for wanting unreleased material, they made fun of him for repeating it over and over again. I do agree in that it was stupid of them to not just ignore him, though.

They've always made demos during pre-production for their albums. I'm sure they've demo'd riffs/segments of songs that never made it to the albums, as they saw them as insignificant or subpar to the material they had preconceived for those particular albums. If they felt the material was subpar to what they have released, Lars would just say as he does now, "Everything that was written back then, you hear on the albums". The presidio had a lot of material written, yet they rarely ever mention it. I think Lars' point of view is, why talk about material the band thought was shit and discarded from recording sessions, compared to what has been released? That's my opinion.

I always got the impression Metallica rarely left any full songs unreleased. Which is why we have no knowledge of full unreleased Cliff-era songs, and why ReLoad and Beyond Magnetic exist.

ya they have said a few times in interviews that the songs on the first 3 or 4 albums were the only songs they wrote during that period...I wish they would get back to that frame of mind

The band also admitted during the SKOM movie that Reload was just polished turds. I love the album, but I tend to agree.

Are you saying those 2 minute long jam sections with James repeating one line of lyrics over loose soloing were just filler? YEAH RIGHT

What they said was actually that with Load and Reload, they took all the material they had and whipped it into shape as much as possible.

You're right. I was tired and it made sense in my head. Translation, every song performance on Cunning Stunts is like a loose slow jam session. Off topic, I know.

I guess they can't really help it if they just write more songs nowadays.

Have we ever heard of any Load-era leftovers?
