I think they should get Rubin to produce it, but let Sneap mix and master it. Metallica would sound quite good.If only I could remember the link to the article speaking of how they have Rick Rubin on board for the next album, plus that Lars is well aware of the extent of the brickwalling issue, and didnt realize at first how widespread opinion was.
If the above from that article (again, wish I could remember the link) is in fact true, then we can only hope.
I have no doubt that the Rubin sound is good for Metallica though. Who else remembers that mystery producer/Andy Sneap rumored mix of BB&S?

The four songs are brick walled, but there's none of the distortion that was on the DM retail CD.
There's still distortion on some parts of the new tracks. It's all over the place in Rebel of Babylon.
In regards to Lulu, it sounds better, but there are still sections that distort. The heavy part in "The View" comes to mind.
I'm not crazy about Metallica working with Ruben/Fidelman again. Their production sound really doesn't impress me in the slightest bit.

There is no way in hell that Sneap should come anywhere close to a Metallica album. I say let Metallica self produce the album as they pretty much did with DM and then bring in Bob Rock and Randy Stuab to get the best sound out of them.

Unless someone online upped the volume using Audacity/similar out of Met's hands...might have to dl another version.
You can use mp3gain to put the mp3 files back to their original setting. Gain was added for some reason.
Track 1 : -1.0
Track 2: -0.9
Track 3: -0.9
Track 4: -1.2

Pass on Bob Rock. Limp-dick production values = bad. And remember, Bob Rock presided over St. Anger, which was far worse than DM ever was.
Pass on Andy Sneap. I can smell a Sneap production a mile away, and it is often teeth-gratingly bad.
Just hire some new talent. There's loads of good producers out there.

lulu is not a stepping stone to anything. again if it weren't for these 4 new songs metallica's rep would be in the toilet. i suggest you read the facebook/youtube comments.
We are talking about sound quality not the songs themselves.

I'd rather listen to it brickwalled than to the fan edits that came out in '08.
Eww. Not me. I like hearing instruments being played.

However, to my surprise, the ones I bought on Itunes were actually listenable. I had tried downing the MP3Gain value on the other files, and there was still crazy distortion just like on retail DM. Just utter crap. The Itunes version is not at all dynamic, but to me, it is actually okay to listen to. I'm pleasantly surprised. I can actually appreciate the music for what it is, which I did not think I could a few days ago, as not stems are available for anyone to "fix."
As for those of you whom still claim that the original DM sounds fine, I respect your opinion. However, if you can listen to it and not be in pain, you either have serious hearing damage, or are listening on a very low level sound system. There is no option C.
Again, if you can do this to these four, and make them sound less smokin', why not to the original 10, and a deluxe release of DM? It can be done.

Chu do a full 360, or what bro?I 'acquired' mp3 copies of Beyond Magnetic and was blown away by the audible digital distortion. I didn't notice these on the youtube versions, but that may be because I wasn't running it through my music software and because 320kbps > youtube quality. Just sayin'.
I seem to remember you telling people off for complaining too much about DM's sound, or something.

Are you sure about this? I got a version from itunes and it sounds just as bad as the metclub versions. So I grabbed Beyond Magnetic from Itunes, as a test, and there is a difference between the files I originally obtained, and the Itunes. It seems someone has not only upped the db on these songs using MP3Gain, but also actually physically altered the file. It is hard to tell, as the files all in Audacity are brickwalled to smithereens.

I think they were fully and audibly clipped to hell when he got em, the way they show up on DM.So is nobody admitting to mastering BM? Cuz if this is what the other DM mixes sound like when Ted got 'em, no wonder he had to publicly distance himself from the project.

I'm good friends with some mastering engineers in Nashville who are in the loop with Ted and gave me the heads up after TDTNC single came out that the rest of the record was equally fuked. I tried to warn everybody here. But i've always been curious what the mixes sounded like that he got.

My gut feeling tells me the next metallica album will have a better production; Lulu being a stepping stone to achieve a better sound.
no the better production will come when they get back with bob rock and crew.

Apparently, some mp3-encoders add gain. I saw a mastering clinic on youtube where some guy told about how it's important to master for -1 or -0.5dB when converting to MP3 for this reason.

Eh don't think so. The main reason why I joined this forum was to pass the time while waiting for Marck III. Guess I got sucked in.

It was recorded in one room with mic leakage and it all took two weeks to record. It's unfathomable that it even can compare to DM that took over a year just to record. Don't confuse mix with recording. It's superbly mixed considering what they had to work with in my opinion. It might not be at all due to Fidelman though, since it seems that they also worked with Lou Reed's guys. Don't really mind another Ruben recording to be honest, but they should totally considering changing up the crew that actually records and mixes it. Indeed, Sneap comes to mind. There's still distortion on some parts of the new tracks. It's all over the place in Rebel of Babylon.
