Ask any joe on the street and they think metallica are a heavy metal band (Even though they are not really anymore).

I don't understand. How is DM not metal? I don't give a fuck if you like it or not, it's still a Metal album.

I also would say Battery, Thingy, and Damage don't really fit the "control" theme

Well in thingy, the people are being controlled by Cthulhu, and Damage is about controlling the world.

But I always thought the theme on Puppets was helplessness.

I think this album was cool in a way because it merged their Load style with their thrash style. Too bad those two styles did not mesh well at times. Shorter songs would have probably better better. Overall a great effort by Metallica but a let down because of the Loudness War. This album had so much potential to be amazing. I hope Metallica gets it right on the next album.

Not sure if you're right about Thingy, but I'm fairly certain Damage isnt about "controlling" the world. At least, doesn't seem that way.

To me, Metallica really pushed their creativity the most on Ride the Lightening, and Master of Puppets. granted that was largely because of Cliff Burton's input, but also because back then, they were hungry, motivated to find success.as a result, both of those albums were absolute GENIUS, and nothing short of capturing lightening in a bottle.

i believe it is between these two albums they will find the best influence for a truly great thrash album. especially if they were to allow Rob to really indulge his various bass guitar talents.

some slap bass would be cool, getting A LOT more creative w/ the drumming would be both key and crucial. double bass seems to have almost completely disappeared since ....And Justice for All, and to me is very sorely missed.

DM, WAS a definite return to thrash roots, but it seemed just so insincere, ( a word that seems to be used alot when discussing this album.) is there a reason for to think the next album will be any different?

to be fair, Metallica did earn the much deserved success they always wanted, however, the double edged sword to that is that now they gotta find a new reason to be hungry and motivated enough to really push the creative envelope. the question is,......do they want to? they already have everything, so again,........do they even want to?

Metallica has always done what they wanted, not what the fans wanted, which has worked for them many times, and other times, not so much. why would they listen to us now?

MAKE IT SOUND GOOD...DAMNIT
Make sure every riff & part are kickass. End of the line for example has a great intro, and other parts later, but that Pearl Jam 'Animal' sounding riff sucks. No teeth or balls. Loadish..yuk.
STOP FUCKING WRITING UNFORGIVEN'S. Get forgiven already
LARS: PRACTICE
Turn Rob up.
James: Stop singing like a pissed off country star.
FUCK RICK RUBIN

-Not shorter songs but they should'nt fill them with incomplete or compromising stuff... guys metllica is about long songs =)
-Lars should kick his a** and make his drums bleed like he did back in the day. I'm sure he could!
-Robert is a genious, like we all know... let him in on the writing process, like Fizd said.
-Less Wah. Yes, Kirk, we know you love it.
-I found the vocals by james were very good on DM but they could still be a bit darker and thicker. Maybe with some professional coching?
-Keep up your trashy, heavy style
-Use more drop-tunings .... PLEASE this fits to james voice so well. Just listen to ANL.
-Like TDTNC,... include a ballad. You are the gods of metal ballads, theres no reason to leave them out :D

Oh..and get bobby rock back

Interesting that a majority of these comments all say shorter songs may have helped DM, cause I've watched an interview with James, and he said that was something he actually fought for. He wasn't keen on having 8 minute longs songs anymore, but Lars really pushed for it, and I guess something had to give.

Exactly whats wrong with Death Magnetic: forced! The End of the Line, The Day That Never Comes, All Nightmare Long, Suicide & Redemption... all too long because of different things. The style of songwriting probably influenced this, everyone throwing ideas to it. Ironically, songs like The Unforgiven III and That Was Just Your Life are the best and I can easily hear they were more of a one man show. Mature bands just are a lot more efficient and inspired this way in my opinion.

No, just no. Leave ballad out if it's going to be like TDTNC. They can make a lot better ballads, and we have a lot of albums to prove it. TDNTC is wannabe epic ballad which is just a bad rip off from their old classic ballads.

Sure DM clipped badly (which doesn't matter because you can always download a much better sounding version on the internet for free), but every album written without Rock's input is superior to any album written WITH Rock's input. (Well, not Lulu. But you know what I mean.) Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, Death Magnetic...now how do they stack up with the albums where Bob butted in? (TBA, Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger.) If Bob lets them write on their own and just focuses on sound quality, that's cool. But he's one of the biggest reasons people bitch about how Metallica dropped thrash, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

I think TDTNC could have been very good. Just like other songs from DM..it was too long - maybe forced to be long. You have to admit that the intro is very good.

Sure ... I did not compare it to One, FTB or Sanitarium. Thats impossible.

Well have to say, the intro is probs the thing I dislike the most of it. Another thing is the middle section before solo, horrible. Also the lyrics could have been better. Comparing to the other ballad on the album, Unforgiven 3, which is a mile ahead of TDNTC. Yes it seems it's a bit forced but yet rest of the songs on the album are better than TDNTC. But I believe they can do better, hope they can prove it on next record.

no they don't. rick rubin? no. bob rock? fuck no. go w/ someone else. bob rock did w/ Metallica what he did w/ Bon Jovi and Motley Crue. he glamorized / commercialized their music and turned them into glamor dolls and posers. no more bob rock. that guy is detrimental to metal.

Very sick of people saying "shorter songs". Would Orion or One be better songs if they were shorter?
Thats not the problem

But that's not the case with DM. Some of the songs really just seemed like they were long for the sake of being long. There were a lot of parts that dragged on unnecessarily. The end of S&R is a perfect example.

Simple answer: that was 25 years ago. If a guy in your band isn't inspired to write long songs then they shouldn't be. Forced songwriting usually comes out as shit, a lesson I thought they had learned with a certain song on Ride the Lightning.

They can still write the occasional 7+ minute track that sounds good (TWJYL, I'm looking at you). No need to close anything out.

Death Magnetic would've been so much better if the songs were much shorter. There was so many "fillers" in each song as if they were trying too hard to relive their old days of having long songs.

They need to stop piecing riffs together to make songs.

They need to come out with music quicker. Stop over-analyzing it with current technology.

They need to come to the conclusion that although family is important, work is what pays the bills. No money=no family. So what if they're rich. Most of us that have to work out asses off for money don't and can't afford to do our jobs half-assed or we'll get fired, and our families will have to endure long working hours, if necessary. Metallica needs to approach the writing process with this kind of attitude. Having THAT said, it might fuel some sort of negative vibe, and well, shit...write about it! Isn't that what made Metallica what it was in the first place? Wasn't Fade to Black (or one of their songs at the time) written about a time when Metallica's equipment was stolen or damaged? There has to be at least SOME sort of, excuse the phrase since it's the name of one of their songs, a Struggle Within.

They're dancing around like a bunch of dads that think they're cool. There's no attitude there at all. You really can't write that kind of music all that well without the attitude. I'm not asking for a carbon copy of Animal from Anti-Nowhere League, but at least somewhere in the middle would be nice. James needs to change the way he fronts, and his hair style. It's like Justin Bieber married Billie Joe Armstrong and Boy George was the surrogate mother.

They need to get rid of Rick Ruben. I don't want Bob Rock back, because all he's going to do is either make Metallica sound current (like TBA) or make them fall completely apart (like St. Anger) and we'll end up with SKOM 2. They need Flemming Rasmussen.

I'd hate to say it, but they also need Jason back. Just look at the Fillmore shows on YouTube that feature Jason. He's headbanging, with minimal interaction with the fans, meanwhile the rest of them are making stupid faces at everyone and other hand gestures that basically say "ok hey guys it's time to clap or join in". Rob's crabwalking never did a damn thing for me. From a metal standpoint, that to me is seriously uninspiring and I just think it makes him look dorky more than anything. If I wanted to watch performers dance around, I'd watch a Jennifer Lopez performance, instead.

Honestly, I prefer longer songs like the first four albums, but at least for the Death Magnetic songs, and also Beyond Magnetic, the individual riffs could easily be cut and some lyrics could easily be wiped out to make complete songs that sound 100% better.
