I was just listening to that song again for the first time in a long time. And I gotta say it fucking rocks! I totally changed my mind about it. When I first heard it I remember thinking it was pretty boring, but I think it's fantastic!!! The riffs, the breakdown in the middle and the crazy solos from Hetfield and Hammett. Brilliant!!!

So yeah, kinda pointless thread I guess lol. But just wanted to give the song some appreciation. It's easily the best song on Death Magnetic along with That was just your life!:)

Should be in DM section I think.
But yeah, awesome song. I hold it in a different league than the other songs. Not necessarily a better league, but, for example, when asked the top 3 it'd be like:

0. Suicide & Redemption
-------------------------------
3. Judas
2. Life
1. Nightmare

It's really in a different league than really any of Metallica's songs. It's probably the best song on the album, by far. That's not saying much because I'm not really a fan of instrumentals. It's probably Metallica's "prettiest" songs, a song you could get laid to. Not sure I like the thought of listening to Metallica while getting laid. Maybe some Firehouse, Def Leppard, Poison or Warrant, but not Metallica.

Im not sure I really understand this...

You put it as "0", which comes before one, so, I'd assume your saying suicide is the best, then nightmare and so on. But then, you put it last on your list...going, 1, 2, 3, 0.

Did you not mean to do the opposite? So as to be numbered accordingly?

Anyways, yeah, I really love the song! It's awesome! As the OP said, everything about it is just awesome IMO. Real nice and heavy riffs, and of course, and awesome slow/clean breakdown!

It's kinda hard to explain. That's what I meant by putting S&R in a separate "league" from the others. It's just incomparable, and so, as I said, I wouldnt include it in the top 3, even if I thought it was the best in the album. I cant say whether it is, because I just find it completely incomparable and isolated from the other songs on it. It stands alone for me, neutral to the rest. I know it sounds vague and weird, but the best way I could think to describe it would be to put it as number zero (not linear, as in it's better than number one), if that makes sense.

I really don't think it's that great. It's better than TU3 and Cyanide but that's not saying much as I strongly dislike those songs. Definitely the weakest Metallica instrumental but to be fair, the other three are absolute masterpieces. If someone wants me to listen to a song that long, it had better be pretty darn captivating. S&R just doesn't do it for me.

S&R is a pretty amazing ride through music. First listen you tend to judge it on Orion, but when you seperate it as a seperate entitiy, I saw it for the beauty it is. And fucking beastly to play on guitar :rockdevil:

Agreed, it's an amazing song. I like it better than Ktulu, to be honest, and about the same level as the other two instrumentals.

Ahh yes, I understand what you mean. It's kind of hard for me to describe too, but I know. Like, if you rate it as "1", then...well, its number one, the best. But if you put it at, say 3 or 4, it's "not as good" as the first one. So, by putting/labeling it as "0", that's your way of putting it on it's own kind of "level", as you said, seperating if from the rest.

It does sound kind of weird, but, at the same time, makes sense! Haha.

Nice, I like how/what you said in the first part! Seperate it as a seperate entity (Just as 'Evil Eye' also explained above)!

And it's beastly because, a BEAST OF A MAN recorded it! \m/

Yep, basically same for the moment. Though Ktulu tends to remain my favorite throughout. (I'm sure you can guess why =p)

As a whole, I love To Live Is To Die the most, of the instrumentals, with Orion a close second (though, sometimes you can reverse that opinion). S&R is easily my third favorite with Ktulu a distant fourth. S&R has my favorite lead, though. James rules.

It's better than Orion. That's not just an "atm" thing either, I liked it better upon first hearing it. Was never a huge Orion fan tbh. Ktulu it can be compared to, not as in better or worse, but because they're structurally more similar.

Kimbo, you sneaky bastard.
