I read somewhere recently that some bands use backing tracks at live shows. Metallica i would imagine would not do this. Can anyone explain this.

Way to generalise ... seriously, if a band has just one guitarist or uses effects (orchestra-pieces, electronics, other instruments) not present on stage and play backing tracks to get those into the show, there's nothing wrong with it

I meant backing tracks as in "we'll just pretend we're playing".

Metallica does use the original Unforgiven III intro track live.

Also, they didn't play the sitar on stage while playing Wherever I may roam until after s&M I think.

I'd guess some artists like Lady Gaga, Jacko or Madonna lip-synch during some/most of the show as they also have to dance. I've heard Ozzy uses it too.

Actually I think at least Lady GaGa sings live during her shows, but with the studio vocal track playing at the same time.
Michael Jackson did sing live up until a point in his career. I don't know when he (more or less) stopped though. Probably during the HIStory tour.

I see.

What I don't follow is what you said about Gaga. If she does sing, then why use a vocal track at the same time? It will interfere and make a mess.

Yeah, but hm...I'll go and see tomorrow if I can find an example, and get back to you.
I'm not entirely sure either...might just be that she has the studio vocal playing during the choruses or something, and that she sings live during the other parts. Don't quite remember, but I'll see if I can find a good example.

That must be it. I remember watching her do that --- sing some bits and then the vocal track would take over some other bits.

That's edited. Somebody but the studio version over that video. There was no crowd noise & it was out of sync. Clearly a shitty editing job by the uploader.

Yeah, I think this could work as a good example of that:
