eg: TBA-get their album as big as their live reputation
Load-Go in a new direction
St.anger-Get all ther shit out in the open
I guess content wise id go for DM (thrasherama :D)
And purpose wise for Load :P

What amuses me are grown men and women who come up with retarded names for the albums, such as St. Shit and Turd I and II.

Lyrically, on some of the Load songs, they surpass anything they've ever done, hands down.
I agree, the are some great lyrics there but musically those records are weak IMO. The metal aggression is missing, they were influenced I guess by the 90's disease or something. I always remember this quote from Jaymz I saw on a magazine back in '96:
"Heavy Metal is not dead, it's just ill"
A response to the questioning of that radical change. If we look back, the 90's was a tough decade for the genre. Halford leaving Priest, Dickinsion leaving maiden, metallica with a grunge approach, etc.

Moderus you got it all wrong, its Turd and ReTurd.
I disagree with ya on Load songs being lyrically surpassing anything they ever done. Except for Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn the rest of the songs are so average and boring.
Hey I respect you and your opinions, I just think Metallica should do what they are best at and that's making Metal albums.

Man, I really despise those albums. St. Anger isn't too bad except the terrible snare drum.

I look it at as Metallica pulling a Rush, and by that I mean they stayed current with the times. Rush released counterparts in '94, and it was a very guitar driven album, with the grunge sound present. It still sounded like Rush, but current.
Metallica did the same thing. They took the Seattle sound and Metallica'd it. The songs weren't fast, but full of groove and meaty sludge riffs, which were still quite heavy. If you look at the Loads with non-heavy metal eyes, they're damn good. And all of this coming from a guy who, during that time, I was at my metal peak, in that I was discovering the likes of Cannibal Corpse and Fear Factory and Death and so on. I didn't like the Loads because they were Metallica, I liked them because they were good.

That being said I think its fair to say that about the guys as well.
Would I have liked this album then? Probably.
But would I have been able to really listen to it and appreciate it as I do now? I dont know.
But what I do know is ( excuse the Shrek referance ) but in terms of an analogy its kinda like on onion! It has layers. The more I peel back and listen the more little things I discover. I still do that with older albums as well.Maybe its age but I like to think about what James is putting into the lyrics for myself, rather than have the meaning spelled out for me. And now that the album is out the question of how Rob was going to fit in recording has been answered. The man's playing speaks for itself. I have loved his playing since Suicidal ( being a bit of a bass freak ) so I am a BIG Rob fan. In a long winded way what I am saying is the album is inspireing and awesome!!!! They keep getting better. I dont even bash Anger because I have come to realize in life that you have to open a door before you go through it. Either complain about the weather or watch the clouds go by and think about tomorrow.
This was a great topic thank you.
And a big thank you to the guys.

Load & Reload have great songs but largely lack power and agression that I like in rock music.
Death Magnetic is extremely powerful, brim full of riffs and energy, but "day" aside there are no great "songs" on there.
You could always whistle Metallica's best tunes IMO as the had great melody and structure as well as power.
Mostly DM is great riff after great riff but has less musicality than many Load songs.
I love DM, and its not been off my car stereo since I got it, so I guess that means I prefer DM to load overall.

You know, I guess from the way that you put it, there were songs that had some groove. I'm bout the same age as you and I also was at the top of my metal peak then. (Fear Factory - Demanufacture is still one of my all time best albums!) Maybe I didn't like the LOAD's cause they were Metallica. With the exception of Alice In Chains I fucking hated the Seattle scene.
I guess looking at the Load albums as Metallica is what makes it so hard for me. I truely feel that it was sup par of what they were capable of.

I love DM, I love Load. I couldn't really pick one over the other because they are good in different ways.
I love all Metallica music with the exception of a few tracks here and there.

Exactly what I think!but for all intents and purposes there's just nothing about DM that requires me to give it many listens. When I first got Load I couldn't stop listening to it. It was fantastic with great atmosphere and vibe. A classic without recognition.

When I first bought LOAD I listened to it twice and threw it away. I even gave Reload one spin. Never again.
As much as DM feels pieced together and forced, it's a step in the right direction for Metallica to get back to playing Metal. I also think U3 is the worst track on the album and could've been left off. It totally kills the momentum of the album for me and I think James can't sing for shit.

When i listen to lOaD and RElOaD I have to skip several songs 'cause there are several fillers there. Poor twisted me, WTF is that? There r good songs there but there are wack songs that weakened the albums. When I listen to D. Magnetic, RTL, MOP, or justice, I can listen to the whole thing without skipping. Those records r strong, every song is either great or good.
I respect the other people's opinion but I can't understand how people can compare D. Magentic to the loads. D. Magentic is a much better, stronger record. A metallica record not a blues/grunge influenced metallica record.

But okay let's compare the highlights of these albums;
Bleeding Me vs. The End of The Line, Cyanide and Judas Kiss
Okay, I'm over...........DM does it for me!!

I'm 35, Turd and ReTurd don't have shit on classic Metallica or Death Magnetic. Hell, give me St. Shitty before the LOADS of shit.
Summed up beautifully!!
Proof
